Agroforestry & Conservation

for People, Planet, and Wildlife

About us

Welcome to the Mary Okelo Conservancy At the foot of the Nandi Escarpment in Kibos, Kisumu, we are regenerating land once intensively farmed with sugarcane. Since the 1980s, Dr. and Dr. Okelo have been replanting indigenous trees, creating a thriving forest that now shelters over 150 bird species and growing biodiversity. The next chapter builds on this foundation: combining agroforestry, community education, and wildlife-friendly farming to restore balance between people and nature.

Our Vision

From monoculture to mosaic — reviving ecosystems, soil health, and biodiversity.

Designing landscapes that grow food, sequester carbon, and provide habitat.

As founders of Makini Schools, the Okelo family brings decades of teaching expertise to empower the next generation of environmental stewards.

A centre for youth programmes, school visits, and shared learning.

Home to dairy herds and ostriches that welcome school visits, alongside the rich life of the forest and grasslands.

Why It Matters

The Mary Okelo Conservancy is a seedbed of recovery:

Restoring a landscape in the heart of western Kenya.

Creating corridors for wildlife and spaces for people to learn.

Demonstrating that farming, forests, and futures can thrive together.
